Welcome to Piedmont

Home to roughly eleven thousand residents in the gorgeous East Bay Hills, the small city within a city known as Piedmont, California, has a long distinguished history known as the “City of Millionaires” in the 1920s. Today, the community is more often referred to as the “Mayberry” of the Bay Area, with quiet, tree-lined streets and a strong sense of community pride and family-orientedness. While the city can no longer claim to have the largest number of millionaires per capita in the nation, some of those millionaires’ opulent homes still stand.

Comprising two square miles, Piedmont is surrounded by Oakland and encompasses significant transportation arteries, including Moraga Avenue, which runs near Piedmont’s northern border; Highland Avenue, which divides the city into upper and lower halves; Grand Avenue, which runs near the city’s western border; and Oakland Avenue, which runs from the city’s center south into Oakland. While the city has no true downtown area and is primarily residential, it does encompass a gourmet grocery store, a gas station, and a bank. And shopping and dining opportunities can easily be found in nearby Montclair, Park Boulevard, and Rockridge. What Piedmont does have in abundance is family-oriented traditions such as an Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony and an old-fashioned Fourth of July Parade.

Real estate in Piedmont is the real star of the community. Most Piedmont homes were constructed between the 1910s and 1940s, and some are historically significant. There are a few two-bedroom bungalows in Piedmont, and at the other end of the spectrum, there are stunning Piedmont estates with eight-plus bedrooms and expansive lots encompassing tennis courts and swimming pools. Piedmont real estate includes a wide variety of architectural styles, including Brown Shingles, Mid-century, heavily banded English Tudors, Normandy Styles, and authentic Mediterranean. And homes for sale in Piedmont vary depending on the neighborhood in which they’re located. Popular Piedmont communities include City Center, Maxwelton Road, and Echo Lane, to name a few.
